Breaking Open
16 x 16 x 18 inches
Walnut / Maple
Private Collection
Breaking Open is full of contrasts—light and dark, smooth and rough, and round and sharp. A black walnut sphere is engulfed by maple crescents, which had been carved with an angle grinder, then broken to create the jagged edges. The tool marks are intentionally left on the maple. This sculpture is a seed, which opened Smith-Bugge to exhibiting internationally. It was shown for three years in the Art-in-Embassies Program in Rome, Italy.
