Osage Bower Bench.

In the Shenandoah Valley and beyond, farmers have long relied upon hedge apple trees that create thorny thickets safeguarding pastures. The tree is also called Osage orange and bois d’arc for its spherical fissured fruit and historical use among Osage Nation archers

Such traditions find expression in this bench from local Osage branches. The high back with curving crest offers a sense of protective enclosure. Adding an element of contemplative tranquility, a central fork with flanking arcs and gothic point carve out space as stain glass. A natural-edge white oak seat offers a plane of repose and perch for savoring the subtle features of the woodland.

Yet a contrary spirit inhabits this reconstruction of forest architecture. With the outward-thrusting diagonals of the back and the lively stride of its legs, the frame exudes the natural energy and aesthetic exuberance of Art Nouveau. This bench wants to transport its occupants as well as anchor them.
