Branch to Branch. This particular boxwood branch is rare because of its size. It is three to six inches in diameter with the long branches laying flat… making it easy to slice the boxwood in a large band saw. Boxwood is slow growing. I had been carrying it around looking for a large enough bandsaw to cut it. Finally, after moving to Winchester, I found the McFarland Sawmill where Nick masterfully longitudinally sliced the large branch in half on their industrial bandsaw.

I love boxwood because of its creamy, close grain appearance and soapstone feel once it is sanded, finished and polished. Because of its hardness, boxwood is well suited for carving and turning. The tree’s slow growing tendency limits the size of the tree and resulting sculptures. Some common uses for boxwood include carvings, chess pieces, flutes, recorders, woodwinds, rulers, handles and turned objects.

This artwork is much larger than the usual boxwood carving making it out of the ordinary and unique.
